Storms, Spirit, and Soaring Success – A Tale of Two Days at the WWGC
The Women’s World Gliding Championship in Zbraslavice has truly been testing the patience, resilience, and optimism of all involved—and the past two days have been no exception.
On Friday, August 2nd, the outlook was particularly bleak. With a cold front advancing from the west and showers already forming, the weather looked even less promising than on previous days. At the morning briefing, the decision was made to cancel the day early for both the Standard and 18m Classes, who at least had the advantage of a scored task earlier in the week. Club Class pilots, however, were left in limbo until 12:15, when the day was officially cancelled for them as well. With no flying possible, attention shifted to the long-awaited International Evening.
And what an evening it was! Starting at 19:00, teams from around the world gathered to share food, drink, music, and culture from their home countries. The atmosphere was warm, festive, and full of laughter—offering a welcome reprieve from the frustrating weather. We sincerely thank all teams for their creativity, hard work, and positive energy. The evening beautifully reflected the spirit of the gliding community.
Today, August 3rd, brought a much-needed spark of hope. The sky was no longer a uniform sheet of white, and remarkably, the morning briefing provided daily tasks for all classes that remained unchanged. With heavy rain approaching from the south, the tasks were necessarily short AATs, but the launch proceeded as planned.
Conditions were still far from easy, with cloud bases at start around 800 m AGL, widespread cover, and showers developing throughout the task area. Like earlier in the week, there was very little room for error, and many pilots had tight final glides—or were forced to outland.
Congratulations to all who flew bravely in these demanding conditions. In Club Class, Michaela Křížová won with 80.25 km/h. In Standard Class, Mélanie Desbois-Gadoulet was the only pilot to make it home, flying at 90.62 km/h. And in 18m Class, Marilyne Abadie-Bérard soared to first place again with 113.69 km/h.
Well done to all pilots—may clearer skies be ahead!
Dva poslední dny na WWGC
Mistrovství světa žen v plachtění v Zbraslavicích skutečně prověřuje trpělivost, odolnost a optimismus všech zúčastněných – a poslední dva dny nebyly výjimkou.
V pátek 2. srpna byly vyhlídky obzvláště pochmurné. Se studenou frontou postupující ze západu a již se tvořícími přeháňkami vypadalo počasí ještě méně slibně než v předchozích dnech. Na briefingu bylo rozhodnuto o předčasném zrušení dne pro třídy Standard a 18 m, které měly alespoň tu výhodu, že již dříve v týdnu získaly body za úkol. Pilotky třídy Club však zůstaly v nejistotě až do 12:15, kdy byl den oficiálně zrušen i pro ně. Vzhledem k nemožnosti létání se pozornost přesunula na dlouho očekávaný mezinárodní večer.
A jaký to byl večer! Od 19:00 se týmy z celého světa sešly, aby se podělily o jídlo, pití, hudbu a kulturu svých domovských zemí. Atmosféra byla vřelá, slavnostní a plná smíchu – a nabídla vítané odreagování od frustrujícího počasí. Upřímně děkujeme všem týmům za jejich kreativitu, tvrdou práci a pozitivní energii. Večer krásně odrážel ducha komunity bezmotorového létání.
Dnes, 2. srpna, přinesl tolik potřebnou jiskru naděje. Obloha již nebyla jednotně bílá a ráno byly na briefingu rozdány taky, které nebyly později ani změněny. Vzhledem k silnému dešti, který se blížil z jihu, byly úkoly nutně krátké AAT.
Podmínky byly stále daleko od snadných, s oblačností při startu kolem 800 m nad zemí, rozsáhlým zatažením a přeháňkami v několika oblastech tratí. Stejně jako na začátku týdne bylo velmi málo prostoru pro chyby a mnoho pilotek mělo těsné dokluzy – nebo bylo nuceno přistát mimo letiště.
Gratulujeme všem, kteří statečně doletěli v těchto náročných podmínkách. V klubové třídě zvítězila Michaela Křížová s rychlostí 80,25 km/h. Ve standardní třídě byla Mélanie Desbois-Gadoulet jedinou pilotkou, která se vrátila domů, a to s rychlostí 90,62 km/h. A v 18m třídě se Marilyne Abadie-Bérard opět vyhoupla na první místo s rychlostí 113,69 km/h.
